Curiosity may have
killed the cat, but curiosity is an essential skill for entrepreneurial success.
Last semester in my science class I learned that insatiable
curiosity is vital to succeed as a scientist. We read several case studies
where curiosity and the desire to answer a question raised led to important
scientific breakthroughs. By the end of the class I completely wanted to become
a scientist. Today I learned that as an entrepreneur I need to develop the mind-set of asking Why?, then looking for the answers. I
hope that as I cultivate the habit of curiosity I will develop the same
enthusiasm for the business world as I felt for the natural world at the end of
my science class.
Right now fear is
my predominant emotion. My fears are many but the biggest fear is that I simply
won’t “get it”. I worry that the weeks and lessons will pass and I won’t
understand the principles being taught. Facts and figures I can memorize and
recall. But principles are a different matter. Fortunately, I have two
assets that can make me successful. First, I am also taking a critical thinking
course this semester that will help me learn to better analyze facts in key
situations. As I improve my analytical skills I am confident that my
understanding of the business principles of successful entrepreneurs will increase.
My second asset is my relationship with the Lord. I know that as I live the
principles of the gospel and honor code, the Lord will bless me with insights
through the Holy Spirit. With the Lord as one of my business advisors I can anticipate
success.
